Why we do it:
To orchestrate identification, testing, certification of children with Learning Disabilities so that they may not drop out of school. To offer remediation to these students so that they can cope in a regular school setup.
What do we do:
In 2007, LIFE established the first holistic centre for Learning Disabilities in Nair Hospital, Mumbai to conduct testing, diagnosis, remediation, counseling and certification, free of cost, for the children of Mumbai. In 2010, due to LIFE’s untiring efforts to help students with Learning Disabilities, the government has offered to fund the operational cost of the center with LIFE acting as a supporting body. We will now be an intermediary between the MCGM schools and Nair Hospital to schedule tests, accompany students to the testing center and counsel parents. Most importantly, LIFE will be the first NGO to employ Special Educators to offer year round remediation to MCGM students with Learning Disabilities.
How do we impact:
Over 2500 children have been tested to date. In addition, regular teacher training programs in learning disabilities are conducted throughout the year for MCGM school teachers. Every year approx 1000 teachers are trained.
